Writing Symbols/Drawing Conclusions
A Collaborative Installation with Albert Pedulla

April 8-23, 2005

From April 8-23, the Center Art Gallery presents a collaborative installation with New York based artist Albert Pedulla. The installation, entitled Writing Symbols/Drawing Conclusions, is an effort to engage a broad scope of students, faculty, and community members in a meaningful discussion on learning and the arts.

The basic framework of the installation is the transformation of the gallery into two interactive spaces that will act as a studio and a traditional classroom. Various classes are scheduled to meet in these classrooms throughout the exhibition.

Upon entering the gallery, viewers may find one of the classrooms occupied by a class, but will be able to view its progress through a window. Viewers entering either classroom will also have an opportunity to continue the collaboration by creating a drawing, taking a photograph, or responding to a question that will be affixed to the gallery’s walls. As a result, visitors who stop to participate will become exhibiting artists, and students who take classes in the gallery will become part of performance pieces. The collaborative piece will continue to be transformed by the various people who create, build, and interact with it.

Albert Pedulla is a sculptor who makes mixed media installations and has shown his work at museums and alternative spaces including the Museum of Fine Arts - Houston, Aljira Center for Contemporary Art, City Without Walls, and many college campuses across the North East. He runs a general contracting business focusing on high-end renovations in Manhattan and the metropolitan area and sits on the board of Christians In the Visual Arts (CIVA). Pedulla is also the founder of Angel’s Net — a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting art projects undertaken by artists and organizations working from a foundation of Christian faith.
