Hammer & Hand:
Contemporary American Metal

August 23 - September 25, 2004


From August 23 to September 25, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College presents Hammer & Hand: Contemporary American Metal, a juried exhibition highlighting some of the best work being produced in contemporary American metal today. Comprised of work by 25 artists from throughout the United States, Hammer & Hand intends to reveal new trends and ideas being produced by today’s best metalsmiths.

Anna Fariello, an independent curator and research specialist in American craft, is jurying the exhibition. Fariello is a former Renwick scholar at the Smithsonian Institution and material culture Chair for the 2003 Smithsonian Folklife Festival. She is author of articles published in Metalsmith, Anvil’s Ring, and American Craft; author of exhibition catalogs on Samuel Yellin and Francis Whitaker; and author and co-editor of the new book, Objects and Meaning: New Perspectives on Art and Craft.

A reception for the exhibition is scheduled for Friday, September 10 from 7-9pm. The barrier-free Center Art Gallery, located on the lower level of the Spoelhof College Center, is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There is no admission charge.
