Calvin College
Alumni Design Competition

February 6 - March 27, 2004

The graphics program at Calvin has come a long way since the first class on Graphic Reproduction was taught back in 1976. Back then, typography and illustration by hand were the norm. Since then, a radical change has occurred not only in the curriculum, but also in the graphic design field itself. With the introduction of the World Wide Web and new technology such as digital photography, computer animation, and desktop publishing, the design field has expanded into new environments and audiences, redefining the role of the graphic designer. The old tools of choice (pencil, marker, rub-on lettering) have been replaced with the computer monitor, mouse, and colored printer.

Beginning Homecoming Weekend, the Center Art Gallery at Calvin College will host its first Alumni Design Competition. From February 6 - March 27, the Gallery will feature graphic design work in nine categories that include entries such as book jackets, websites, animation, brochures, and logos. The competition also involves a collaboration with a number of local design firms, including Hanon McKendry, which has helped shape the competitions advertising and jury of design professionals.

An Art and Design Alumni luncheon is scheduled at 11:30am on Saturday, February 7, followed by an Awards Ceremony and Opening Reception at 1:30pm that is open to the public.

The barrier-free Center Art Gallery, located on the lower level of the Spoelhof College Center, is open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday. There is no admission charge.
