THE GOOD CITY: BURTON HEIGHTS IN IMAGE AND WORD

The Calvin College Center Art Gallery invites the community to view The Good City: Burton Heights in Image and Word/La Buena Ciudad: Burton Heights en Imagen y Palabra from February 24 to March 14 and March 24 to April 8. An opening reception is scheduled for February 27 from 7 pm to 9 pm.

This comprehensive collection of documentary text and images is the collaborative project of the Burton Heights community, Professor Debra Rienstra’s English 101 class, and senior photography student Melissa Keeley.
Burton Heights, a Grand Rapids neighborhood that has experienced dramatic ethnographic changes throughout the past decade, provides a concrete example for exploring the question “What is the Good City?” Through quotes and photography, The Good City: Burton Heights in Image and Word/La Buena Ciudad: Burton Heights en Imagen y Palabra reveals both the visions and realities of the Burton Heights community in relation to the ideals of the Good City. All text will appear in Spanish and English.
The barrier-free Center Art Gallery, located on the lower level of the Spoelhof College Center, is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 9 pm, Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 12 pm to 4 pm. There is no admission charge. For more information call 616 957 6271.
