Vision & Priorities: Faculty Research & Development

Calvin needs to attract and retain exceptional faculty who further the college's mission.

Calvin professors are excellent teachers, exceptional scholars, gifted researchers and engaged mentors. Faculty at Calvin enjoy the relationships they build with students and take seriously their role in shaping student lives. Their work is a critical component in Calvin’s mission.

And while teaching, as former Calvin provost Joel Carpenter said, is “job one,” the faculty’s teaching is invigorated and enhanced by its scholarly work and research activities, pursuits that in turn provide numerous benefits to students who work alongside faculty. Professors are eager to share the joy of discovery at the lab bench or the byline in an academic journal. Indeed, Calvin offers students the caliber of research opportunities typically found in major universities.

This careful, scholarly mentoring by Calvin faculty is a key reason that Calvin graduates consistently enter the top graduate programs in their chosen fields and find good jobs directly out of college.

But Calvin needs to offer more of its professors opportunities for funded scholarship and research, which in turn provide invaluable experiences for students. The faculty research and development component of the Campaign for Calvin will position the college to expand such opportunities for years to come.
