Steven E. Meyer discusses "The Balkans: Tragedy in Perspective."

Since the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1992, tragedy has plagued the Balkans. Ethnic hatred and the violence it produces are the most deadly forces at work in this part of Europe today. But this has not always been so. Misunderstanding of Balkan ethnicity exacerbates the tragedy and prevents us from playing a truly positive role in that melancholy land. Dr. Meyer addresses our inability to cope with the fact that the forces driving the post-Cold War world are fundamentally different from those that drove the Cold War. Dr. Meyer is with the Central Intelligence Agency. As part of that role he is a professor at National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.
