| Today we drove to Enkhuizen, an old port on the former Zuider Zee. We walked the streets and enjoyed this living history museum of early life in the Netherlands. For many of us it was a view of the lives of our grandparents or great grandparents. Then we drove across the Afsluitjijk to enjoy the lovely city of Makkum where we picked up lunch from the street vendors. Makkum is the center of boat-building in the Netherlands and the bays and canals are filled with beautiful boats. John Witte and our bus driver, Fred, treated us all to fresh ollie bollen when we returned to the bus! We drove through the Frisian countryside and saw the massive farms with healthy cows, sheep and horses grazing – all very picturesque. We loved the beautiful farm houses with the barns attached to the main house. We arrived in Dokkum at about four p.m. to rehearse for our concert. The evening concert for the St. Boniface Festival was held in the historic Grote Kerk at 7:30 p.m. – moved up a half hour to accommodate the soccer (football) tournament between the Netherlands and Sweden. The audience of just over 200 was appreciative and the acoustics were thrilling, but the guests left quickly to watch the 8:45 p.m. game. The Netherlands won and the noisy streets were filled with happy fans late into the night. The St. Boniface Festival was a huge event for this city and our local organizer, Anneke Hamstra, was wonderful. It was an excellent musical start to our tour. After the concert we were all presented with a box of Wilhelmina pepermunt, made in Dokkum. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
