"Images of the Prodigal Son" art collection in Bonita Springs

Read more about the church's exhibition in their most recent newsletter (.pdf).

Please join us to see the Prodigal Son art collection hosted by Larry and Mary Gerbens.

Many words have been used to describe the Larry and Mary Gerbens Prodigal Son Collection ─ splendid, inspirational, breathtaking and even “a living testament.” But when you experience it for yourself, that’s when these words will truly come to life!

Alumni and friends of Calvin along the Gulf Coast are welcome to join First Church members to see for themselves the Gerbens’ unique visual journey into Christ’s story of forgiveness, reconciliation and grace put forth in the Gospel of Luke. The Prodigal Son Collection will be on exhibit in the church’s art gallery, on loan from the college. Read more about the collection.

The exhibit includes a wide variety of genres and mediums, ranging from amazing etchings, serigraphs and lithographs to vivid acrylic, oil and watercolor and beyond to ceramic, fabric, carved mahogany and glass. Some of the pieces are old, but many are newer works that offer a contemporary point of view on a timeless story.

Dr. Gerbens ‘69, from Calvin’s advancement division, will be hosting a discussion about the collection and its significance to him personally. Larry and Mary spent over a decade collecting and commissioning art on the theme of the Prodigal Son. “The message of grace and forgiveness embodied in the parable and the art has become our ministry,” Larry said.

Dr. Larry Gerbens, from Calvin’s advancement division, will talk about his extensive art collection which focuses on the Prodigal Son. We will enjoy a salad buffet at the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs.

Dr. Gerbens and his wife, Mary, started their art collection in the mid 1990s. Inspired by the prodigal son parable, they continued to collect numerous original art works and writings on that theme. Their collection now has a permanent home on Calvin’s campus and is a living testament to the “art of forgiveness.” In 2009 a book entitled The Father & His Two Sons: The Art of Forgiveness, which features the collection, was published.
