An opportunity to serve
Dear Colorado alumni, parents and friends,
The Calvin Alumni Association is partnering with World Renew to gather friends of Calvin to assist those in the Boulder, Longmont and Lyons area deeply affected by the destructive floods of September 2013. Although this disaster is off the front pages, there remains so much to do!
Calvin alumnus Cal Van Heukelem ’69 is the local coordinator for World Renew’s Disaster Response Services, and Volunteers in Action is matching the needs of victims with the gifts of local volunteers.
The Calvin Alumni Association effort is focused on two work weekends. The first is Thursday–Saturday, August 21–23; the second is Thursday–Saturday, September 11–13, which includes the Colorado United Day of Service marking the one-year anniversary of the flood on the 13th. You can choose how many days of the weekend you are able to work, working half days, full days or longer (with overnight lodging available). You may serve as an individual, family, or with any size group, and choose how you would like to help: at an existing work site, where the greatest need is, or in a job uniquely suited to your gifts.
Please consider choosing one of these dates for serving in Christ’s name. This is the first of what the alumni association hopes will be many opportunities for alumni, parents and friends to give of themselves—in solidarity with Calvin students who, for 50 years, have engaged in Christ-centered service through the college’s Service-Learning Center.
Contact Cal at 303-598-9881 if you have questions or want to give of your time and talent.

Colorado Rockies game - see photos
Eighty alumni and friends from the Colorado Chapter enjoyed a great night of tail-gaiting and baseball at the Rockies game. Tail-gating began at the light rail station where we had Calvin alumni from all over enjoying hot dogs and burgers. After our food, we met downtown to get our tickets and set up a Calvin blanket right in front of the stadium for 40,000 people to wander past. All in attendance enjoyed the Rockies hitting their first grand slam of the year in the 1st inning. In the 5th inning, the Calvin group especially cheered when we saw our name on the score board. The Rockies won and a great time was had by all!
