Norton Simon Museum with Prof. Luttikhuizen

Saturday, April 13, 2013 | See photos

Join Calvin art history professor Henry Luttikhuizen for an afternoon at the Norton Simon Museum (411 West Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA; map). The museum has invited Luttikhuizen to lead a lecture titled Sensing the Sacred in Early Netherlandish Painting — a talk that will examine some of the ways in which Netherlandish artists promoted particular religious practices by evoking deep empathy among beholders. Earlier in the day, Luttikhuizen will lead a pair of special tours for Calvin alumni and friends through the museum’s permanent collection.

12:30 & 1:30 p.m. Tour the permanent collection
(meet in front of the museum)

4:00 p.m. Lecture: Sensing the Sacred in Early Netherlandish Painting
(located in the museum’s theater)

RSVP for the tours to the Calvin Alumni Office at (616) 526-6142. The events are free to alumni ($10 for alumni guests), but spots for the tours are limited and seats for the lecture are first come, first served.

Who are we?

Welcome to the Southern California Alumni Networks! We cover a large geographic area and represent several thousand Calvin alumni. We focus on three areas:

  • Events to bring together alumni and friends
  • Scholarships to help with travel expenses for prospective students (donate now!)
  • Recruitment to encourage our local students to brave the Michigan winters!

Scholarships: Apply | Donate

Alumni in Southern California want to encourage prospective students to visit Calvin, and our alumni network can help! If a junior or senior who lives in San Diego or Southern California (generally defined as zip codes 90000-93199, 93400-93499) and visit through Fridays at Calvin, the admissions office will give the student a $200 voucher up front to help cover a flight. If the student applies and enrolls by May 1 of their senior year and brings travel receipts to the admissions office by the end of their first semester on campus, they’ll be reimbursed for the remainder of their flight AND they will get an additional $500 scholarship.

For more information, contact Stephanie De Weerd, admissions counselor (pictured above, far right), and check her schedule to find out when she'll be visiting area schools so you can encourage students to consider Calvin!

But, we need donations to keep this program running. Consider making a donation now.
