Dear Grand Rapids Area Alumni and Friends:
After the success of the Meijer Heart Center “Around Town” gathering in November, you might think the Calvin Around Town planning committee would be stymied in an attempt to follow up that fine event. Never fear! Our next activity is a look at the new Grand Rapids Press Printing and Packaging Center in Walker. Most of you have, by now, experienced the revised look of the Press and this edition of “Around Town” will give you a chance to see the actual paper made. This interesting evening is set for Thursday, February 10, 2005 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (the date and times line up with a chance to see newspaper printing in process).

It took five years and an $80 million investment to make this printing and packaging adjustment to the Press . On November 8, 2004 the entire Press shifted over to the new format and production facility and 300 of the 800 employees of the Press moved from downtown Grand Rapids to Walker . We'll be allowed to tour much of the 170,000-square-foot structure and hear from Press publisher Danny Gaydou on the journey of the Press to this new facility. The self-guided tour structure is supplemented by signs such as the ones we enjoyed at the Meijer Heart Center event. In addition, the Press has set up creative “ink blots” on the floor that help guide you along the tour path. Finally, we also hope to round up some of the Calvin alumni who work for the Press to give you even more of an “insider's view” of Press production.

Mr. Gaydou will speak at 7:00 p.m., with the touring experience lasting throughout the evening.

We have additional room in the spacious facility, so there is a 500-person limit (SOLD OUT) on this edition of “Around Town.” However, if you think that lofty number gives you plenty of time to send in a registration, think again! Numerous “Around Town” gatherings have sold out and we don't want you to miss this unique opportunity.
