Dear Grand Rapids Area Alumni and Friends:
For our first “Around Town” of the 2004-05 season, we bring
you back to Calvin so you can discover the new “hidden jewel”
of the campus – the Vincent and Helen Bunker Interpretive Center.
We’re thinking that this edition of the series is a great family
opportunity, interesting for kids and grandparents and everyone in-between,
so the day is a Saturday, September 18, and the building and surrounding
trails will be available from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., complete with
a luncheon cook-out on the grill. This is a fabulous chance to get a
tour of the innovative new classroom-and-nature-display facility that
has already won a “gold rating” from the U.S. Green Building
Council.
The Grand Rapids Area Alumni Chapter is pleased to invite you, your family and your guests to see this outstanding new structure and to venture onto the trails of the 100-acre Ecosystem Preserve — a share a refreshing outdoor lunch with other Calvin alumni and friends. There will be tours of the Preserve on the hour (12, 1, 2 and 3); presentations in the Center by Calvin biology educators Randy Van Dragt and Cheryl Hoogewind at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30; and “hands-on” nature activities for children.
Even the lunch will be thematic and fun for the family, with hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers supplemented by “ants on a log,” “mud pies” and “bug juice.”
The Preserve is home to over 100 species of birds, almost 30 species of mammals, 235 plants and a variety of fish, reptiles and amphibians! Come see how Calvin’s creative new 5,270-square-foot Bunker Interpretive Center will augment the beauty of God’s creation and help students and members of the Grand Rapids community understand the drama of everyday growth and change of a natural habitat.
