Please join us for an informal coffee and discussion with Dr.
Douglas Diekema '82, Pediatrician and Medical Ethicist at Children's
Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Diekema has been
featured as the spokesperson for the hospital ethics board that allowed
the surgery that stunted the growth of a severely mentally and physically
disabled child named Ashley in 2004 in order to allow her parents to give
her better care. The case became public in 2007 and has drawn national
attention including stories in People and Time magazines. Following the
discussion, the January Series shuttle service will be available to take
you to the Fine Arts Center where reserved seating will be provided for
Dr. Diekema's January Series
presentation. |

in the Seminary Chapel
Join Heritage class members and friends for coffee and a special presentation
about the book Divided
By A Common Heritage: The CRC and the RCA at the Beginning of the New
Millennium which was co-authored by Calvin College political
scientists Corwin Smidt and Jim Penning, and Hope College sociologists
Donald Luidens and Roger Nemeth.
Dr. Smidt holds the Paul B. Henry Chair in Christianity and politics and
serves as Executive
Director of the Paul B. Henry Chair in Christianity and Politics at
Calvin College. Dr. Roger Nemeth, of the Hope College sociology faculty
and the national board of councilors of the Social Science Division of
the Council on Undergraduate Research, will present on research which
led to the book.
Parking is available in the Calvin Theological Seminary lot. |

the newly renovated Chapel with greetings from Seminary President Neal
Plantinga

Join Calvin alumni and friends for coffee, a tour of the Seminary and
a special presentation by Dr. Adel Abadeer, associate professor of economics
at Calvin since 1999. He will speak on the early
history of Islam, the fundamentals of Qur’anic/Islamic teaching
and theology, and the Islamic perspective on Jesus and Christians.
Dr. Abadeer accepted Christ in 1992 about the same time that he graduated
from Boston University. He is currently working on a book, Toward
an Understanding of Modern Day Slavery, in addition to his research
on informal institutions and the marginalization of women in less developed
countries. |
