Major January events

The January Series 2014, January 8–28, 2014, again promises to entertain and educate the community here and around the world—there are over 40 remote sites this year! Speakers like Bill Rasmussen (ESPN) and Michael Le Roy (Calvin) will be bringing you fifteen days of a free liberal arts education.

The Calvin Symposium on WorshipJanuary 30–February 1, 2014, brings together a wide audience of pastors, worship leaders and planners, artists, musicians, scholars, students and other interested worshipers every year. Online registration is open now!

Thank you!

This fall, students gathered on the Commons Lawn to create a giant card of gratitude, with special thanks to the donors who help make their education possible. Watch the video. You can thank a donor, too!

This winter, we’re showering our students with care and encouragement. You may have recently received a notecard in the mail on which you may write words of encouragement and return it with your year-end gift for Calvin students. Or you may make a gift online anytime. If you have not received a notecard, please e-mail annualfund@calvin.edu to request one. Thank YOU!

Advent, Christmas resources

As the season of Advent continues, remember that you can watch Chapel or LOFT worship services live or from the archives. Some of the messages this month include The Messiah sing-along, Christmas carols with the Wind Ensemble, prayers for exams, and Advent messages from Neal Plantinga and Chaplain Mary Hulst.  Also, every year the Advent and Christmas Resource Guide from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship is a thoughtful, helpful resource for many.

Students abroad

For the first time Calvin has participated in International Education Week, a nationwide celebration that observes the importance of studying abroad. Calvin has been recognized in an Open Doors Report for its total number of students who study abroad.

As many Calvin students prepare to study abroad over Interim or second semester, see the global connections that Calvin has: 12 semester offerings, 30+ interim courses. Chimes keeps in touch with students abroad via the Calvin Chimes Abroad Facebook page.

Also, from Spark, the quarterly magazine for alumni and friends of the college, read "Through Their Own Eyes"—students reflecting on their own global experiences.

Special January concert

In addition to the other major events mentioned for January—The January Series, The Calvin/Hope Rivalry, Worship Symposium, there is a special concert of choral music being planned for January 20 in Calvin's Chapel. Find out more about A Concert of Choral Music by local composers (four of whom are Calvin alum) and several other alumni musicians.

Festival of Faith and Writing

Online registration for the Festival of Faith and Writing, April 10–12, 2014, is now open! The Festival is a biennial celebration of religious writing, bringing together readers, writers and academics for conversation. Speakers include Anne Lamott, James McBride, Miroslav Volf, Pam Munoz Ryan, Gene Luen Yang, Rachel Held Evans, Richard Foster, G. Willow Wilson, Bret Lott, and many more. Pay just $185 now until Jan. 31, 2014!

Also online, find out information about scholarships (for recent alumni) and group discounts. A Festival registration would also make a great Christmas gift for the book enthusiast! Questions? ffw@calvin.edu. We hope to see you in April!

Services offered to alum

In addition to Festival scholarships available for recent alum, there is a premarital workshop offered by Broene Center that is open to Calvin alum—recent or not-as-recent.

The career development office also assists students and alumni. Career Comment, a regular feature in Spark, the quarterly magazine for alumni and friends of the college, provides updates on their services— and their results!
