Calvin-Wire: April 15, 2013

Since 2008, 14 Calvin students have been named Goldwater Scholars. During that six-year stretch, no other liberal arts college in the United States has had more than 11. For 2013, Calvin finds itself on a short list of colleges and universities that have three recognized scholars (plus a fourth receiving honorable mention status!), which includes the likes of Harvard, John Hopkins University and University of Michigan, to name a few.

Chemistry professor Carolyn Anderson, who serves as the college’s liaison with the Goldwater Foundation, was recently awarded a three-year $230, 000 research grant from The National Science Foundation. And thanks to two $200,000 grants, Calvin faculty are working with teachers from area schools to improve their teaching of writing and math.

Also, a new faculty member's documentary about the station wagon is up for an Emmy.

Student Service

A northwest emergency food center, Supper House, is just one place Calvin nurses are learning about healthcare. For years, Calvin student nurses have done practicum work in area neighborhoods.

Recently Calvin was named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. This is Calvin’s second time being so honored. A few students were featured on a recent news broadcast: "Calvin College Students Pay It Forward."

Read "This Square Inch" yet?

Here's a compelling excerpt from President Le Roy's most recent newsletter, "This Square Inch":

"As the chorale was rehearsing and preparing this song over the past several months, they could never have known the large and small ways that God would use their music for good, but this performance clearly changed the plight of many starving North Koreans." Read more »
