Calvin in 24 on 10.12.12

Did you see the Calvin in 24 Facebook page from Friday, October 12, 2012, as the day unfolded online, through photographs, from Calvin students, faculty and staff. See what was shared this year for Calvin in 24.

Choral excellence

The Calvin College Alumni Choir, whose 49 members are all Calvin alumni, has been established to organize, promote, and sponsor a choir of the highest musical caliber. Past conductors of this choir include Anton Armstrong and Charles K. Smith. The choir's current conductor, Pearl Shangkuan, is well-known as a conductor and clinician all across the U.S. and Asia.

The choir kicks off their 36th year with the "Celebrate Life" concert. They also lead worship services throughout the year. Find out more about them and where/when they'll be singing this year.

Stories, news

Computer science professors Victor Norman and Joel Adams spend their free time teaching computer programming to middle and high school students, thanks to a grant from the John and Judy Family Spoelhof Institute for Christian Leadership in Business.

Gluing together model airplanes as a child, engineering graduate Ben Beezhold '12 had no idea that his future held working on one of the world's truly “model” airplanes, Boeing's award-winning 787 Dreamliner.

Ben Kreisman is Calvin's new audiologist.  He will serve the community through a new audiology lab, but his path to Calvin is not the typical one.

Art professor Jo-Ann VanReeuwyk has been recognized as the 2013 Michigan Art Education Association Higher Ed Teacher of the Year.

Chicago Job Fair

On Wednesday, October 24, 2012, Calvin is sponsoring the inaugural Chicago Job Fair for students and young alumni. There they will network with each other and discuss employment and internship opportunities. Those interested have until October 17 to register online ($25) but be sure to read more about where we'll be and what we'll be doing.

The Calvin Network of Chicago will be hosting a pizza dinner for students (80+ are already signed up!) and local alumni on Wednesday, October 24, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the University Club. The dinner is just $5 (and is included in the $25 registration for those attending the mid-day portion of the event).

You might also "Like" the Calvin Game Day Facebook page. The Game Day Staff is working to promote student attendance at all Calvin sporting events. And it's working!

Worship resources

Among several new resources added to the Worship Institute website recently is a Sermon on the Mount resource guide, particularly of interest to those doing the current all-campus Bible study. We also have added a resource guide for Thanksgiving worship for those of you involved in worship planning at church.

We hope these resources might be of some benefit to you and also perhaps to those you know.

Elections

"Is civil discourse possible in today's politics?" See the site about civil political discourse (what?!) to find resources and video reflections from alumni and faculty "experts" that relate to the upcoming elections, what gives them hope, etc.

Who's your one?

What could happen if we each concentrated on just one high school senior and made that prospective student our own “come-to-Calvin” focus for the next nine months?

Every Calvin alumna, alumnus, parent, faculty and staff member and current student knows a high school senior who would benefit from Calvin’s “heart and mind” education. So, think about who your "one" could be and how you might connect with them this year to personally encourage them to consider Calvin. (There's a free t-shirt in it for you!)

Your first step? Pick your "one" today!

And did you know...?

This year's incoming class has the strongest academic credentials of any class in the college’s recent history. This year’s class has an average GPA of 3.67, ACT and SAT scores of 26.6 and 1204 respectively, and features 23 National Merit Scholars. Including these 23 incoming students, there are now 73 National Merit Scholars in the student body.
