Spark subscription, alumni stories

Spark cover
Spark, the magazine for alumni and friends of Calvin College, connects thousands of households worldwide.  Your voluntary subscription to Spark assists the alumni association in providing the magazine to all alumni.  During this subscription drive if you send in a gift of $50 or more, you will receive a set of Calvin luggage tags to thank you for your prompt and sincere support.
What's the most-read section of Spark?  Class notes.  Do you have a marriage, newcomer, employment update or Calvin friends story to share?  Send your information via uKnight (with photos, if possible), or the Spark website.  You can also share a story tip about a fellow alum.
Thank you for your support of the Calvin Alumni Association and Spark magazine!

Calvin College's Homecoming is now in the fall -- combined with Family Weekend -- on October 22 & 23, 2010, and all are invited.  The Calvin Music Festival in the new Covenant Fine Arts Center, a lecture by National Forest System deputy chief Joel Holtrop, a River City Improv show, the 40th anniversary of "The Bananer," a choral retreat led by the Calvin Alumni Choir (read more below), and more events are scheduled while the campus shows the beautiful colors of fall.  Find out more online or call 616-526-6142 for details.
Please take note of this special event for Homecoming weekend, A Choral Retreat for All Who Enjoy Singing. Join the Calvin Alumni Choir on Saturday, October 23, to learn creative ways to improve your musical skills in community with others. Learn new songs in the setting of a large choir under the direction of internationally respected conductor and clinician, Dr. Pearl Shangkuan. This musical retreat ends with a brief worship service. The incredible price of $10 includes the music scores, refreshments and the opportunity to sing with a nationally recognized choir and conductor.  Register now!

And in the meanwhile, golfers, please also plan to join us for the 41st annual Alumni Golf Tournament on September 11, 2010!

Campus-wide Bible study

Philippians Campus Bible Study

This fall the Calvin community--students, faculty and staff--will be studying Philippians together.  Study groups will gather for 10 weeks, using study guides provided by the campus ministries office and books by N.T Wright and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship. The Sunday evening LOFT services will also dig into these themes.

Parents are invited to follow along individually or are welcome to use these resources to lead a small group in their church, workplace or community.  The campus ministries website provides links to order books and download study guides.  Hope College and congregations from Michigan to Washington will also be studying Philippians with us this fall.  Won't you join us, too?

Coop's column

Dale Cooper is chaplain emeritus and adjunct faculty in the department of congregational and ministry studies at Calvin.  He has recently begun publishing a column for the Calvin Institute of Christian WorshipCoop’s Column: reflections on the Christian walk,  a weekly article that explores numerous facets of corporate Christian worship. He hopes his column will both teach and encourage readers, while promoting dialogue.

"I want these weekly articles to teach. Worshiping God worthily demands careful thinking about what we’re doing, and why. I also hope that they encourage. Accordingly, as I write each one, I shall offer a prayer that what I write and you read equips us to live more faithfully and as God intends."

Read the first three articles he's published so far, "There I Have Pledged to Set My Foot, Too"; "God Everlasting"; and "O!"  You may want to bookmark this page to follow him on the journey, too.
