Celebrating John Calvin's 500th birthday
"In ourselves, we are scattered; in Christ, we are gathered together."
-John Calvin, Commentary on Isaiah 53:6
Calvin College, along with the world-wide Reformed community, is celebrating the 500th anniversary of John Calvin's birth in 2009. Although named for a single reformer, Calvin is home to students, faculty and staff with roots in many Christian traditions. This diversity strengthens us because we are united, not only by a common Christian faith, but by a common calling and common vision.
Information about the celebrations, and those worldwide, are listed and linked on Calvin 500, sponsored by the H. Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies. The conference, "John Calvin: Myth and Reality," April 16-18, is hosted by the Meeter Center and co-sponsored by the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship and the Nagel Institute for the Study of World Christianity.
Also, the campus store is getting in on the celebration---all John Calvin books and bobble heads are 15% off until April 15. You can also purchase one of 500 John Calvin medals (pictured above) specially cast for this celebratory year.

Swimming and diving results; Spring break photos and stories
"Our perseverance is not founded on our own power or industry, but on Christ."
-John Calvin, Commentary on Romans 5:1-2
Over spring break, Calvin came away from the NCAA Division III Championships at the University of Minnesota with a national diving title for Erica Deur, three diving All-Americans in Jeena Velzen, Casey Herman and Erica Deur, and diver and diving coach of the year honors for Erica Deur and her coach Aaron Paskvan, respectively. For the second time in three years, Calvin College senior Erica Deur has been named the Division III Women’s Diver of the Year by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. In addition, Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan has been named Division III Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. It also marks the second time in three years that he has received the honor. Over the four day meet hosted by the University of Minnesota, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team closed out its fifth consecutive top-10 national finish. Calvin recorded seven All-America performances and five honorable mention All-America efforts.
And now that all students are back from spring break, you are able to view photo galleries from the Women's Chorale tour to the Pacific Northwest where they interacted with alumni, friends, families and prospective students. Also, you can read the entire "story" from the track and field team as they trained in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
Festival of Faith & Music
"This is our wisdom, to be learners to the end."
-John Calvin, Commentary on Zechariah 4:11-14
The Festival of Faith & Music, which will take place this year from April 2 through 4, is a biennial conference that brings together musicians, critics, journalists, musicians, artists, and listeners for three days of discussing and celebrating insightful music that explores, in some significant way, issues of faith. They seek to be conscientious listeners, agents of renewal and prophets of the Light, but this is only one aspect of their mission. There is now a News & Stories feature on faith and music, Calvin-style, which includes links to the artists and their music, as well as a link to an interview with Ken Heffner, Calvin's director of student activities.
This year's performers include The Hold Steady, Lupe Fiasco and Over the Rhine.
Check out a wealth of great stories on the News & Stories site, including more about the award-winning floor of the Van Andel Arena (featured in News Briefs on the right side of the News & Stories page) and how Cesar Chavez is being remembered.
"For we delight in beautiful things; and wherever God's gifts appear, we ought to have our hearts filled with joy."
