Out of thousands of schools in the U.S., why Calvin?
I knew I would receive a great Christian education along with a financial aid package that was favorable. Calvin provided the opportunity to play college basketball and participate in its vibrant community life. Also, I was pre-destined to come to Calvin. My father taught here and my three older sisters came here as well. The blue print to follow had been set.
What was your best class or best professor you had?
Professor Fondse’s Intro to English Literature class. A la Dead Poets Society, it was one of those classes that taught more than English but how to live life to the fullest. I’m forever indebted for the challenges and inspiration I received in that class. We read everything from MKL speeches to South African novels to classic American literature. Professor Fondse’s charisma and passion is what brought those works to life and made that class the best I’ve ever taken.
What was helpful about the student resources at Calvin?
The job center was instrumental. I located my internship from a posting on the centers online site. The counselors assisted me in tailoring my resume specifically for the job. That internship ended up leading to a full time position once I graduated.
How did you get involved at Calvin?
I participated in Rangeela. I was on the basketball team for a year and on the track team for a year as well. I was an orientation leader for international students and also an RA my junior year.
What was the community like at Calvin?
Calvin community was amazing. I formed life long friends that will never be replaced. I had American friends who immersed me in various aspects of North American that tested my my limits…from from skiing to hiking. I was also opportune to have friends from all over the world which enriched my understanding of life.
Funniest prank someone did to you?
The guys on my floor decided it would be funny to move all the things in my room into the coffee kitchen and move all things into the coffee kitchen into my room. I was not amused at all!
How did Calvin College prepare you for your career of choice?
Calvin professors were knowledgeable and experienced in their fields. They also have connections with professionals in the industry which proved invaluable. Lastly, my classmates have also been a great resource as we are keen on helping each other become successful in life.
Why would you recommend Calvin to others?
Calvin formulates a worldview that is truly unique. The perspective you leave with on your purpose for life is more valuable than any six figure salary. Grounded in Christ, you leave with a balanced understanding of how your gifts can be used to meet the world’s needs as you desperately pursue God's calling on your life.
