Guidelines for Student Organizations

The Student Life Committee and the Dean and Assistant Dean of Student Development oversee student organizations and seek to ensure their continued positive impact at Calvin. The following guidelines shape the existence of student organizations at Calvin. Each student organization will:

1) Seek to reflect the educational mission of the college and provide benefit to Calvin students or the campus as a whole. In addition, an organization's activities may, at times, be interesting or beneficial to the larger Grand Rapids community.

2) The student organization must have at least twelve active members. The student organization's activity should be of potential benefit to the entire student body or to a large enough extent of the student body to justify the expenditure of money for activity.

3) Any proposed student organizations, which have a sport related focus, must meet the following criteria:

  1. The focus of organizations activities must be recreational. Competitive aspects of an organization must be limited to 10% of the organizations activities.
  2. The activities of the organization must have limited liability for the college, ensuring that no additional insurance coverage is needed.
  3. The oversight of the organization must be in the purview of the student organizations advisor and not require the use of a coach.

4) Welcome any interested Calvin student. In addition, faculty and staff may be invited to participate in the activities of a student organization.

5) Complete the registration and chartering process each year.

6) Report its operations and activities on a yearly basis to the Student Life Committee.

7) Receive funding from the student allocations budget based on the SLC's approval of the organization's charter and a satisfactory annual evaluation.

8) Receive approval for organizationally sponsored events at least one week in advance using an Event and Activity Form.
