Fundraising for Student Organizations

While your organization’s budget covers your yearly expenses, if you are planning a special event (i.e.: a conference or special guest lecturer), supporting a cause, or looking to help another organization, you do have options for fundraising as long as you follow the rules.

  • The rule of thumb is that if you are planning an on-campus fundraising event with the primary givers being the on-campus community, you need to go through the Student Development Office just like a normal event. You use the Events and Activities Form, making sure that you indicate the plan to raise funds. This kind of fundraiser might look like a service auction, bake sale, or benefit concert only advertised to on-campus folks, etc.
  • If you are planning to solicit funds coming from off-campus sources, meaning the primary givers are off-campus folks, you need to go through both Student Development and the Development office.
    • This applies even if your fundraising event takes place on campus.  There are rules, both Calvin and federal, concerning anyone who gives to Calvin College (non-profit giving) – even a student organization of Calvin College. This kind of fundraiser might look like a mailing, ticketed or raffled event, or benefit concert/competition/auction advertised to off-campus folks.
  • Please contact the Coordinator of Student Organizations and Activities, Erin O’Connor-Garcia (eao4@calvin.edu) or Development (development@calvin.edu) for more information.
