Student Resources - Academically-Based Service-Learning (ABSL)

General Description
Most Calvin students will have the opportunity to engage in service-learning in connection with coursework. Faculty members in almost every department of the college integrate Academically-Based- Service-Learning with the content of courses. These couses include relevant activities that provide a connection between theory and practice. By incorportating appropriate service experiences into our coursework, we seek to better understand how we can serve God in our chosen professions. ABSL courses are offered in a variety of disciplines--from Computer Science to English to Economics. In an ABSL course students can:

  • Partner with a senior citizen in an introductory English course to write a life history
  • Learn graphic design by developing a new image for a nonprofit organization
  • Tutor a child in reading or math in an urban public school
  • Promote healthcare and put nursing skills into practice at community health fairs
