Faculty Resources - Integrating Service-Learning within the Academic Curriculum

General Guidelines for Integrating Service-Learning with Academics

Before the Course Begins:

Identify the major goals of the course.

Highlight those goals that can be put into action by experiential learning in a service-learning setting.

Consult the Service-Learning Center to assist you in the implementation of your service-learning project.

Select the site or sites that can offer your students the kinds of experiences necessary to achieve the goals you have designated.

Develop a mechanism to facilitate integration of service-learning work with academic work in the classroom.
As the Course Progresses:

Make connections, when possible and appropriate, between the lectures/discussion material in the classroom and experiences in service-learning sites.

Devote some class time to open discussion of service-learning experiences.

    Model service-learning yourself.
