I’m Gonna Sing! The Faith and Music of the Unknown Black Bards
Luke Powery
Sat, Apr 9; 10:00am, Covenant Fine Arts Center
Before the blues, jazz, gospel, or hip-hop, there were the Negro spirituals. Despite the fact that the spirituals are the foundation for these other genres, the spirituals are often forgotten in discussions about African American expressions of music. This interactive presentation attempts to rectify this omission by highlighting the significance of the spirituals in the past and for the present. Through spoken and sung word, some of the major themes of the spirituals will be explored with the hope of recognizing their contemporary relevance for a life of faith and music.
