Baby Dee

Baby Dee was born in Cleveland, Ohio, but moved to New York in 1972 and became a musician. A Central Park street performer who played harp in a bear costume, Dee also studied Renaissance music and worked as a music director at a Catholic church in South Bronx. Dee writes in her Drag City bio, “I was good at the sacred and I was good at the profane but I could never get the hang of anything in between and I went from the street to the church to the street again and then I stopped.” She found herself back in Cleveland, cutting down trees for a living and writing new music. Encouraged by her relationship with Matt Sweeney and Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy), Dee released Safe Inside the Day in 2008, which in comes “full circle” to reflect on the street where she grew up.
