W60 Interim in Comparative Education: Amsterdam. This course is taught in Amsterdam where students develop a framework, which can be used to compare education in other countries with education in their own country. Students apply these principles to education as it is carried out in Japanese, Dutch, British, and International schools as well as the European Community School. Students participate in a practicum experience in order to gain an understanding of ways in which attitudes and beliefs about children and education determine curriculum, instruction, and school environment in different countries. Students are led by an art historian in a seminar at the Rijksmuseum to help them view with understanding some of the most famous paintings. There is also a seminar at the International Court of Justice in The Hague in order to help these future teachers understand the workings of the principal judicial organ of the United Nation. Evaluation is based on readings and journals. Prerequisites: Education 307 or 322 and permission of the instructor. Fee: $2600. G. Stronks. Off campus.
