Transfer Course and Credit Information

General Information and Policies

Transfer credit will normally be awarded for

  • work done in accredited institutions.
  • academic courses similar in nature to courses offered at Calvin College.
  • courses with a minimum grade of C.
  • up to 70 semester hours of credit will be allowed from accredited community colleges.

Regardless of how many transfer credits students bring, in order to graduate they must

  • complete their last year in residence.
  • complete four upper-level courses in their major.
  • complete one Interim course for each year in residence.

A maximum of 32 semester hours may be obtained through the transfer of non-classroom-based credit. Students may not take more than two Interim courses in a single department. Interim and semester courses which meet off campus normally require special application in advance of registration.

Veterans will receive credit, as recommended by the American Council on Education, for liberal arts courses taken through the USAFI and for a maximum of nine semester hours taken by correspondence courses from accredited universities in the program.

Calvin students seeking to obtain credit from other schools.

  • Determine the school you wish to attend.
  • Decide which course(s) you wish to take. This document may be helpful in finding core courses at other schools
  • Fill out the Transfer Credit Pre-approval Form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office.
  • Register at the other college as a guest student. If requested to verify your standing at Calvin, use the Michigan Uniform Undergraduate Guest Application.
  • Complete the course with a grade of C or better.
  • Request an official transcript be sent to Calvin College for posting to your AER.

Several school are listed on the Calvin web site with a list of equivalent courses.  This list contains local schools as well as schools often used for transfer credit by Calvin students.  If your school is not in the list, we will still accept credit.  Filling out a Transfer Credit Pre-Approval Form will help you know whether or not your course will transfer for the purpose you intend.  Read the form carefully and obtain your advisor’s signature if you are seeking to transfer courses to fill requirements in a major or a minor.
