MATH 221 The Real Number System and Methods for Elementary School Teachers (4). F and S. Core: Mathematics. This course provides prospective elementary school teachers with the background needed for teaching mathematics. Both content and methodology relevant to school mathematics are considered. The structure and applications of, and relationships among, the real number system and its subsystems are a major emphasis. Pedagogical issues addressed include the following: the nature of mathematics and of mathematics learning; conceptual and procedural knowledge; the role of problem solving, reasoning, communication, and representation in the elementary school mathematics curriculum. Prerequisite: meeting the Calvin admission requirement in mathematics. Not open to first-year students except by permission of the instructor.
