Plaster Creek Watershed—Since the spring of 2004, representatives from Calvin College, Christian Reformed Church, and the West Michigan Environmental Action Coalition (WMEAC) have been meeting to address the problems and the potential of Plaster Creek. This group has evolved into the Plaster Creek Working Group (PCWG). A new grant from the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship will enable Calvin to develop plans for implementing concrete creation care outreach efforts. (www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/scholars/pcw)
Focus the Nation—Focus the Nation is a national higher education initiative to foster dialogue on solutions to global climate change. In conjunction with Focus the Nation, Calvin hosts educational seminars, films, forums with elected officials, and opportunities to get actively involved in finding solutions for the crisis of global warming. (www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/engagement/focus)
Sustainability Summit—As a follow-up to Focus the Nation, members of the Calvin community gathered to consider ways to foster greater environmental stewardship in the college’s institutional practices. Action plans for the coming year were developed for many departments and offices (www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/ceap)
GreenIT—After the Sustainability Summit, a group from Calvin Information Technology (CIT) has been meeting to identify and develop resources including a Green Wiki page with information about Calvin, local, state, and national environmental activities, energy facts and tips, on and off-campus resources, product recommendations, discussion boards and much more. To participate in the Green Wiki go to moodle.calvin.edu/go/csc. This links directly to the Calvin Sustainability Community in Moodle.
van Reken dorm—One floor in the newest wing of the van Reken dorm provides an opportunity for interested students to study and learn about environmental responsibility and Christian stewardship in a unique residential living-learning community. The Creation Care floor allows “motivated students the opportunity to more intentionally learn about and promote environmental responsibility, sustainable practices, and Christian stewardship-at the local, national, and global level…” (www.calvin.edu/admin/housing/residence-halls/vr-creation.html)
