Being a Scholar | Campus Resources | Scholarship Websites

Introductory Comments About Being a Scholar:

Realize that you are embarking on a way of life, not a job. It’s not all-consuming, but all-connected.

Work smart as well as hard. Choose your burdens and your battles.

You are a scholar—contributing to a discipline, no longer just a learner, but a member.

Develop original research—making, not churning.

Developing your distinctive voice—you ought to be able to say what you do—so you become the “go to” person. Jan is the go-to person for religion, rural resource management and worldview (secular) and social structures and environment in religious circles. Helen is the go to person for religion and feminism (secular) and communication and feminism in religious circles.

Have a research program—a line of thought you’re pursuing, not just a cluster of individual projects.

Give to the discipline as well as take—that means not just doing your own writing, but interacting with the community—reviewing for journals, for grants, serve on committees, take office, organizing conferences and paper sessions.

Networking—being a colleague. Local level—encouraging your colleagues and sharing your research with them. Promote them! Just show up at their events. At a larger level, look for people who care about what you care about and make friends.

Integrate your teaching and scholarship—teach a class from a point of view and assign book reports of books germane to your scholarship.

Develop appropriate boundaries—say no to what doesn’t invigorate you or your line of research. This will change from season to season of your life.
