Benefits of a 5-Year Plan:
- Helps you become more conscious of the process of moving an idea to publication
- Helps you become more intentional in developing connections with a learned library or a learned colleague here or abroad
- Puts you in a position to take advantage of grant or publication opportunities when they arise
- Helps you use time more effectively because you know what to pick up if you have several hours (or 15 minutes) without commitments or papers to grade
Elements of Your 5-Year Plan:
- Purpose Statement: Articulates the context for your research.
- Your Details: Focuses on the specifics of what you are going to do and how you will do it.
- Build a working bibliography.
- Identify skills and resources you need to complete your project(s)
- Identify your Network: Identify key people you want to become acquainted with.
- Work Plan: Map out the details of your project within the framework of the "Big Picture".
