Dr. Otto Selles is a professor in the French Department at sellesCalvin College. Dr. Selles has been selected as the 2008-2009 Calvin lecturer and will be speaking on the topic "Tolerance’s Boundaries."

Academic History

Academic Positions
Otto H. Selles received his B.A. and M.A. from McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario), and completed his Ph.D.in 1994 from University of Paris-IV Sorbonne, France and then taught at Redeemer College in Anacaster, Ontario where he was assistant professor of French. Dr. Selles then came to Calvin College in 1997 as an associate professor and is now professor of French. He has served as chair of the French Department (2002-2008) and has been a member of the Faculty Steering Committee for the Festival of Faith and Writing (2006, 2008). In 2003 and 2005, he directed Calvin College's French study abroad program, based in Grenoble, France.
Publications Survey
Dr. Selles research focuses principally on the ties between the French Enlightenment and Huguenot (French Calvinist) writers of that period. His dissertation studied Huguenot texts on religious freedom that appeared before Voltaire's Treatise on Toleration (1763). This study lead to the publication of a critical edition of Antoine Court's 1751-1753 work Le Patriote français et impartial (Champion, 2002). He has also published articles on Pierre Bayle, Maximilien Misson, and Voltaire. Parallel to his work on French literature and religious history, Dr. Selles has written on novels by contemporary English-language authors (Yann Martel, Leif Enger ) and on topics related to cultural studies. He also pursues creative writing, particularly poetry (new songs, Pandora Press, 2001).
