Dr. Ruth Groenhout is a Philosophy professor at Calvin College. Dr. Groenhout has been selected as the 2009-2010 Calvin lecturer and will be speaking on the topic "Care and Justice in Medicine."
Abstract of the lectures
Medicine is an arena where care and justice seem to collide. Justice requires that we distribute things fairly and equitably—that every one get a fair share of what they need, no one gets more than they are due, and no one bears too large a share of the burdens. Medicine’s mandat
e to care, however, conflicts with this view of equity. A physician or nurse is trained to care for those who need treatment, and to provide optimal care for patients.
