Science Research Workshop

June 5 | 9:00 - 12:00 | DC 110
Led by Glenn Remelts, Director of the Hekman Library

Research tools and sources in the sciences have evolved rapidly. What is the library doing for the sciences and can it do more? We’ll look at tools, sources, and services available from the library website. We’ll have a conversation about expectations for science research and what the library can do to assist. The goal of this workshop is to increase awareness between the sciences and the library - let’s talk.

Critical Thinking Workshop

June 11 and 12 | 9:00 - 12:00 | Spoelhof Center 322
Led by Jim Bradley, Director of Assessment and Institutional Research

In the spring of 2006, the Faculty Senate adopted a new list of Student Learning Outcomes which represented a condensation of what we say we are trying to accomplish with our students at Calvin. Among the items on the list was “Students will...Demonstrate skills in sound reasoning and critical thinking.” Last fall, the Provost commissioned a Critical Thinking Taskforce to address how to assess our students’ abilities to think critically. To that end, the CT Taskforce has developed a rubric for assessing critical thinking as evident in student writing.

This workshop will provide faculty with a review of the development of this rubric as well as some experience in its practical application. If you would like to review the Critical Thinking Rubric, please visit www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/resources/ct-rubric.pdf to download a copy of the latest draft.

Quick and Direct: Accessing Electronic and Print Journals

June 13 | 1:00 - 3:00 | DC 110
Led by Steven Putt and Sarah Kolk

"Information" is ubiquitous in the online research environment and the possibilities for access are unprecedented and nuanced. Attend this workshop to glean the latest journal research tips and to learn how the library organizes resources in a way which simultaneously affirms the information-seeking behavior of the digital native student and comforts the Luddite.

Culture & Learning (EDUC 617)

June 18-22, 8:30-3:00
Led by Denise Isom, Education

Globalization, diversity initiatives, multiculturalism; we live in a world that increasingly requires us to engage with cultural complexity. Teachers need to understand their own cultural identities, the cultural identities of their students, and the ways in which culture impacts teaching methodologies, curriculum, and student learning. Focusing on the major ethnic cultural groups of the nation and region, this workshop will help participants develop a deeper understanding of the complex cultural characteristics of Whites, African Americans, Chicano/Latinos, Asian Americans, and First Nations/Native Americans and
the intersections among culture, race, gender, and class. (2 sem. hrs.)

Teaching Africa: History, Culture, and Issues, (EDUC/AADS 646)

June 18-22, 8:30--11:50

You may already be teaching about the great continent of Africa, but a limited exposure to Africa’s vastness, complexity, and diversity can create difficulties in teaching this content effectively. This workshop will offer the resources of faculty members and African students studying at Calvin. The goal of the workshop will be to discover more of the riches and complexity of Africa, and to develop curriculum resources for your classroom. Note: The workshop offers 1 hour of credit or 3 CEU’s and meets only in the mornings.
