Assistant/Associate Professor

The department of Education at Calvin College is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member specializing in either Special Education or Literacy to begin August 2012, pending administrative approval.

Responsibilities:

The Education Department needs colleagues to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more of the following areas:

  • Special Education (Intellectual Disability / Inclusion / Cross Categorical)
  • Literacy (Elementary and Secondary)

Faculty members typically teach three courses per semester as well as a January Interim course, actively pursue a scholarship agenda, advise undergraduate and/or graduate students, and serve on college and departmental committees.  Service to a variety of church and civic boards and agencies is gladly given.

Qualification, Skills, and Abilities:

Candidates should have an earned doctorate or be near completion of their degree.  In addition the Department seeks people who have P-12 teaching or research experience, knowledge of diverse learners and instructional differentiation, commitment to the integration of justice and social-cultural perspectives into teaching and research, dedication to the integration of Christian faith and learning, and allegiance to the mission of the college.  Faculty are expected to demonstrate teaching excellence and to be actively engaged in scholarship.  Calvin encourages applications from persons of color and those with labeled disabilities.

About the Department:

Calvin College’s Education Department is an energetic team whose work is inspired by a commitment to social justice rooted in love. The department situates its teaching and scholarship in the context of a vigorous liberal arts education that promotes lifelong Christian service and produces substantial and challenging art, research and scholarship. A Reformed, Christian worldview and socio-cultural perspectives frame the department’s scholarship and teaching. The faculty is dedicated to seeking, nurturing, and celebrating cultural, ethnic, gender and ability diversity and to preparing teachers who are responsive to this diversity.

The Education Department is central to Calvin’s teacher education program, which includes approximately 40 faculty who are teaching and researching in 22 different academic departments across campus. Many of Calvin’s 4000 undergraduate students are in teacher education, making it one of the college’s largest programs. In addition, we have graduate programs leading to M.Ed. degrees in the areas of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership, Learning Disabilities, and Literacy. All of Calvin’s education programs are approved by the State of Michigan and have candidate accreditation status with the Teacher Education Accreditation Council.
