Faculty Opening: Chemistry and Biochemistry

The Calvin College Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning September, 2012 or 2013, pending administrative approval.

Qualifications:

The department seeks candidates who demonstrate strong commitment to excellence in both undergraduate teaching and scholarship.  The successful candidate should be comfortable teaching biochemistry.  The area of research interest is open, although preference will be given candidates with computational biochemistry experience.  It is expected that all faculty establish a vigorous research program involving undergraduates and apply for external funding. A Ph.D. is required.  Calvin faculty are expected to have an active interest in integrating faith and science (see this page for perspective on teaching at Calvin). Applicants with postdoctoral and/or teaching experience will be given preference.  Rank is open. 

About the Department:

The department has 12 faculty members and offers ACS degrees in chemistry and biochemistry, and has excellent facilities and equipment for conducting research.   Faculty and students are engaged in variety of research programs funded by PRF, Research Corporation, NSF, and NIH.

Application Procedure:

Review of applications will begin on March 1 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should send:

  1. a cover letter that specifically addresses the ways the candidate can support the mission of the college,
  2. a curriculum vitae,
  3. undergraduate and graduate transcripts,
  4. a brief outline (2-3 pages) of research plans that would involve undergraduate students, and
  5. A 500-1,000 word statement describing how your Christian faith informs your teaching and scholarship
  6. arrange for the submission of three letters of recommendation.
