Developing a CCE course

Offering a CCE course is easier than you think. There are many courses that provide excellent engagement experiences for students, and with the right elements, can easily be designated as CCE courses. There are four components to a CCE course: Orientation, Direct Engagement, Reflection and Evaluation. The Implementation of Cross-Cultural Engagement document provides descriptions of these criteria as well as further explanation of what is expected from each type of CCE course.

CCE Integral Course

A regular semester or interim course in which the CCE component is integrated into the required coursework. All students enrolled in this course fulfill the CCE piece and receive CCE credit. Proposals for new integral courses are generally presented by departments, yet faculty members are encouraged to convert an existing course to a CCE course.

CCE Optional Course

A course in which a faculty member proposes an optional CCE piece for students needing CCE credit. Before offering the option to students the faculty member must propose the optional CCE experience to the CCE Coordinating Committee for approval.

To add a CCE option to an existing course print a PDF of the proposal form.

IDIS 290 CCE Course

A student-initiated contract course in which a student, guided by a faculty sponsor, fulfills the CCE piece as an independent study (IDIS 290). This is done through extended engagement and written reflection. Proposals for IDIS 290's must be approved by the director of CCE.

If you have been asked to be a faculty sponsor for an IDIS 290, check out the faculty guidelines and reflection resources.
