Chapter 5 - Faculty Development

5.4 Interim Study Leaves

5.4.1 Definition

An interim-term study leave of absence is a leave of absence for the interim term only, and is granted only for approved projects.

5.4.2 Conditions for Granting an Interim-Term Leave of Absence

  1. An interim-term study leave shall be granted only for engaging in creative, scholarly, or professional activities of significant worth to the college, the church, or the community. Faculty members are encouraged to develop projects which are particularly suited to the interim term. The Provost, academic deans, and department chairs may also recommend projects and initiate requests for interim-term leaves of absence.
  2. Each request for an interim-term study leave must be justified by a written proposal to the dean (application forms are available in the Office of the Provost), accompanied by the formal support of the department concerned, indicating how it will provide appropriate courses and staffing for the interim program if the request is granted.
  3. Interim leaves are not intended to substitute for the expected scholarly and professional use of the summer or of the academic year, and requests for such leaves shall explain why the interim term is particularly appropriate and necessary to carry out the proposed project.

5.4.3 Application Procedure

Application for an interim-term study leave must be made in writing by November 20 of the academic year prior to the academic year in which the leave is requested. Applications must be made, initially, to the department chair, who shall forward it with his or her recommendation to the academic dean. The academic dean or a designee shall consult with the appropriate parties and inform the applicant, the appropriate department chair, and the Interim Term Committee of his or her decision.

5.4.4 Financial Considerations

The grantee shall receive full salary and fringe benefits while on an interim leave of absence. Should the grantee be employed with remuneration or be supported by another person, institution, or agency during the leave of absence, the financial obligations of Calvin College to the grantee will be reconsidered in the light of the financial arrangements made with the person, institution, or agency employing or supporting the grantee.

5.4.5 Written Report

The grantee must, at the conclusion of a leave of absence, present a written report to the academic dean of his or her division on the results or progress of the project undertaken during the leave of absence.
