5.2 RESOURCES TO SUPPORT FACULTY RESEARCH & SCHOLARSHIP

The college maintains several programs in support of faculty research and scholarship. This table summarizes what each program offers, who is eligible, when and where to apply, and some important dates. Faculty members should be aware that application forms, criteria, and dates change somewhat from year to year so they should seek advice from the appropriate administrative office before applying.

Sabbatical Leave Leave of absence to engage in creative, scholarly, or professional activities of demonstrable worth to the applicant and the college. Full-time faculty, rank of Assistant Professor or higher, with at least 6 years full-time service since last sabbatical. September 20 of year prior to Sabbatical year (e.g., Sept. 20, 2001 for sabbaticals in 2002-2003 school year). Dean for Research and Scholarship, who presents applications to the Faculty Development Committee. 5.3 or Office of Research and Scholarship (scholarship@ calvin.edu)
Combined Support Leave Leave of absence to reduce teaching load or provide support when combined with non-college funding. Any teaching faculty, admin. or library staff for purposes mutually agreeable to the applicant, the dean, and the president. No official deadline; varies with the requirements of the leave requested. First to the Department Chair, who forwards the application to the Academic Dean.  
Interim Study Leave Leave of absence during interim term for purposes mutually agreeable to the applicant, the department chair, the provost, and the president. Faculty members and administrators. November 20 of the academic year prior to the year of the interim leave. (Late applications may be considered under special circumstances.) Negotiated individually with the Academic Deans in consultation with the Department Chair and the Provost. 5.4
Calvin Research Fellowships (CRF) 1.Reduction of teaching loads for one or more terms.

2. Stipend for summer research project.

Faculty members on regular appointment with a record of solid scholarly or artistic achievement (or unusual promise of it). September 20 of year prior to academic year of the fellowship (e.g. Sept. 20, 2001, for Fellowships in 2002-03 school year). Summer research stipend applications use separate form, due February 1. Submit to Dean for Research and Scholarship, who presents applications to the Faculty Development Committee. 5.5 or the Office of Research and Scholarship (scholarship@ calvin.edu)
Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship (CCCS) Partial funding for rigorous, interdisciplinary scholarship of a distinctively Christian nature on important theoretical or practical issues. Calvin faculty as individuals or in self-selected groups of two or more, with other scholars as appropriate. October 15 of the year prior to the academic year of the project. Notification of funding by December 15. Submit to Director of CCCS, for decision by the CCCS Governing Board. CCCS Constitution and Bylaws, available from the CCCS office, phone x7162.
H.H. Meeter Center for Calvin Studies Fellowships to support research on John Calvin and early Calvinism. Faculty with relevant expertise. Applications must be submitted no later than January 1 of the academic year preceding the project year. Submit to Director of the Meeter Center. Visit the Meeter Center. Enter through Hekman Library, Fourth Floor.
Calvin Alumni Association Faculty Service Grants Awards up to $2,500 to promote and encourage faculty members in responding to God's calling as scholar and servant. Faculty who have not received Alumni grants in the previous 2 years, with emphasis on projects that share skills and expertise. Application forms are published in November and are due in mid-December for funding at the end of the following Spring semester. Submit to Executive Director of Alumni and Public Relations. Calvin Alumni Association Faculty Research Grants Awards between $500 and $5,000 for projects that result in improved classroom teaching or traditional scholarship. Full-time teaching faculty. (May include request for student research assistance.) Application forms are published in November and are due mid-January for funding at the end of Spring Semester that year Submit to Executive Director of Alumni and Public Relations. Calvin College Faculty Summer Seminars for Christian Scholarship (Pew Summer Seminars) Two seminars each summer, led by distinguished scholars, $2,500 stipends for participants. Faculty with expertise relevant to seminar topic or discipline. Generally around February. Submit to Director of Summer Seminars (English Department). Visit Summer Seminars Office in North Hall Room B-58, or call Coordinator of Summer Seminars, phone x8558.
McGregor Summer Research Fellowships $500 stipend for faculty supervising undergraduate summer research in the humanities and the social sciences. (Students also receive a stipend.) Full-time faculty in the humanities and or social sciences. Faculty applications are due in early February, and student applications are due in mid-March. Dean for Research and Scholarship, SC-335. External Funding: Endowments and Foundations Financial support for scholarly projects. Faculty and administrators. Varies with funding source. Submit to funding source with assistance from Director of Foundation Relations. Guidelines and proposal development assistance available from the Director of Foundation Relations and the Dean for Research and Scholarship.
Supplemental Travel Assistance Up to $1,500 for scholarly travel, after department funds are exhausted. All faculty. Anytime. Dean for Research and Scholarship, SC-335. Office of Research and Scholarship, SC-335A, or scholarship@ calvin.edu.
Science Division Summer Fellowships Stipend for faculty supervising undergraduate summer research in the sciences. Full-time faculty in the sciences. Faculty applications due in early February. Administrative Assistant, Science Division, NH-156. Science Division Office, NH-156, x6200.
