3.2 TYPES OF POSITIONS
Following are types
of positions at Calvin College. Some of these include faculty enfranchisement.
Other positions do not include enfranchisement.
3.2.1 Tenure-Track
Positions
A tenure-track position
is a faculty position which will not be eliminated in the foreseeable
future. A tenure-track position may be made non-tenure-track because of, inter alia, enrollment shifts or decline.
3.2.2 Non-Tenure-Track
Positions
A non-tenure-track
position is one which may be eliminated in the foreseeable future. All
positions not designated as teaching faculty positions are non-tenure-track.
Faculty positions that are non-tenure-track positions may be made tenure-track
because of, inter alia, enrollment shifts or increases.
3.2.2.1 Teaching Positions
Positions for teaching faculty.
3.2.2.2 Research Positions
Research Fellowships
are for persons who do full-time research on the Calvin College campus
for a limited time period. Persons who hold these positions are not members
of the faculty. They are usually here because of the resources on this
campus or because of funding designated for these positions. Such fellowships
are created on occasion by the Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship
and by the Governing Board of the H.H. Meeter Center for Calvin Studies.
3.2.2.3 Lectureship Positions
The position of lecturer
is for persons who have a term or visiting appointment (a minimum of one
semester) to Calvin and whose responsibilities are primarily lecturing.
Normally these persons are not members of the teaching faculty.
3.2.2.4 Part-Time Positions
Occasionally in some
departments and frequently in some others, the need arises for more teachers
than those who are appointed to tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions.
Such departments may meet their teaching need with the appointment of
persons to part-time positions. These positions arise because of one or
more of the following: inability of departments to fill all of their allotted
tenure-track or non-tenure-track positions, reduced-load appointments
to tenure-track or non-tenure-track positions, leaves of absence, illness,
specialty courses, unbalanced enrollments in fall versus spring, and the
like. Persons who hold part-time positions are not members of the teaching
faculty.
3.2.2.5 Adjunct Positions
Adjunct positions
are created when it is deemed desirable, as judged by the president upon
the advice of the provost and Professional Status Committee, to maintain
an institutional relationship with a given person or set of persons for
a period of time. Persons holding these positions may or may not be paid,
depending upon the nature of the relationship. Persons who hold these
positions are not members of the teaching faculty and are not eligible
for tenure status.
Within the college
there may be adjunct positions in a department for persons from administrative
offices or other academic departments. Such positions and appointments
to them need the approval of the Professional Status Committee, the provost,
and the president.
3.2.2.6 Cooperating
Staff Positions
Cooperating staff
positions are positions created for persons who direct or coordinate programs
with which Calvin College is affiliated. These positions exist for the
purpose of coordinating these programs with the college program. Appointments
to these positions are extended to persons by virtue of their positions
in the affiliated programs. Persons who hold these positions are not members
of the teaching faculty. An examples of a person holding such a position
is the Director of the AuSable Institute of Environmental Studies.
