Calvin's Sustainability Summit 2009

Friday, May 29, 2009
9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Commons Lecture Hall

As a Reformed Christian college we take seriously the Biblical mandate to be stewards of God’s good earth, and we recognize that we have a responsibility to interpret, wisely use, and compassionately care for God's creation. In the past decade the Calvin Environmental Assessment Program (CEAP) has spawned many conversations and actions that focus on creation care.   We’ve been encouraged by the variety of creative ideas that have been developing within the Calvin community.   To build on this synergy and as a follow-up to last year’s Sustainability Summit, we are organizing another one-day campus event to encourage departments and units within the college to take next steps.

The Sustainability Summit will take place on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Commons Lecture Hall and will provide opportunities for teams of people within departments and units to focus their attention on what they can do in their sphere of influence to foster greater environmental stewardship.  The Sustainability Summit will not focus on curriculum development but will encourage reflection and planning to impact institutional practice within and among various sectors of the Calvin community.  This one-day event will include an overview of Calvin’s history and progress to date, some examples of what other colleges are doing, and an opportunity for each unit or team to think creatively in developing an action plan for the coming year.  These action plans will help Calvin build on and deepen components of the Calvin Strategic Plan (2008-2013).

We are inviting teams within departments or administrative units of the college to attend the Sustainability Summit as a group.  New faculty and staff are also welcome.  Working sessions will be held in the morning, lunch will be provided, and the action plans developed by each unit will be shared with the full group at the final reporting session at 2 p.m.
