Calvin College’s teacher education program is looking for a colleague to inspire and challenge us with visionary leadership. We are a large community of teacher educators spread over twenty-two departments, including a dynamic education department of twelve full-time members. Our new dean would be part of a team engaged in preparing undergraduate and graduate students to provide excellent teaching in a demanding but exciting age—with classrooms characterized by a diversity of experience, culture, abilities. We aim to prepare education students to teach in global, urban, rural, familiar, and unfamiliar situations; we work to develop future teachers with a commitment rooted in faith, love, and a passion for service and justice. We also seek a leader to share our dedication to refreshing and extending our profession through research and scholarship, including a continued commitment to procuring grants for advanced study.
Responsibilities
General responsibilities include leading program and policy development and implementation, participating in hiring and reappointments across the teacher-education unit, communicating with internal and external audiences, monitoring state and national policies, and overseeing state-level program review and national accreditation. This position is primarily administrative, though it includes limited teaching opportunities and membership in an academic department. Partners who collaborate with the dean for teacher education include the Education Department chairperson, the director of graduate teacher education, the chair of the college-wide Teacher Education Committee, the academic deans, and the provost. The dean for teacher education reports to the academic dean for the Division of Arts, Languages, and Education.
Qualifications
Expected qualifications include an earned doctorate, evidence of excellent teaching and administration, expertise in the discipline of teacher education, and commitment to the integration of Christian faith and learning. We seek applicants who are excited by Calvin’s Expanded Statement of Mission (http://www.calvin.edu/admin/provost/mission/index.htm) and by our commitments as a Christian college within the historic tradition of Reformed Christianity.
