Dean for Research and Scholarship
The support and development of research and scholarship is central to the mission of Calvin College. Good scholarship informs teaching and engages the college in a communal search for knowledge that bears redemptively on this world. Scholarship supported by the college takes up issues in many fields of study as well as their conceptual foundations and applications. Calvin College scholars have reached substantial audiences through publications, presentations and global networks of affiliation. They are encouraged by fourteen scholarly Centers and Institutes at the college that cultivate and disseminate scholarship.
The Dean for Research and Scholarship is a critical catalyst for Calvin’s continued commitments. Among the key responsibilities: Strategic planning, budgeting and facilitation for Calvin-based research, scholarship and major external grant opportunities; academic counsel to committees and faculty embarking on such ventures; management of the Center/Institute network by providing support and oversight; administration of Calvin-funded programs for research, including the sabbatical program; collaborative oversight of the grants office; a faculty development program to cultivate future scholarship; college representation in such efforts across the broader scholarly network.
The successful candidate must have: a personal commitment to the Christian faith in its Reformed expression, a record of scholarly productivity, the desire and temperament to build scholarly confidence in other Calvin faculty members as they become more diverse and global, the ability to work in a team environment, appreciation for multiple expressions of scholarship; and a commitment to collaborative leadership with the Directors of Calvin’s Centers and Institutes.
