Chemistry 103, General Chemistry Honors Lab

2007-2008

Chemical analysis of pond water quality on Calvin College's campus

Instructor: Prof. Mark Muyskens. Assistant: Mr. Jarrad Utter.

Description of the project: Students will be trained, and then carry out water analysis of assigned lakes on campus, and analyze the data including presentation of the results in poster format. A total of approximately 14 hours of work will be required over the semester, in addition to the normal Chem 103 class and lab requirements. After an initial orientation session to be scheduled, the student will work together with a lab partner at flexible times to carry out the remainder of the project. The student will need to complete the requirements of the regular Chem 103 course at a level of B or better, and the student must participate at a satisfactory level with the honors project to receive honors credit. The number of students in this project will be limited to 12. Student participants should be eligible for the Honors Program at Calvin. The project will be included in the Calvin Environmental Assessment Program fall meeting and is eligible for Academically-Based Service Learning credit.

Honors General Chemistry Laboratory conducted a 4-week study of the Calvin College surface water supply. The project involved collecting samples and analyzing them for chemical components related to water quality. The sites sampled covered most of the surface water sites on campus including the seminary pond, the athletic field ponds, and the Ecosystem Preserve.
