There is no better way to encourage someone than by saying, "I believe in you and want to help you develop the gifts God has given you." That is, in effect, what scholarship donors have been saying to Calvin students for many years. The growth of the donor-funded "named scholarship" program at Calvin College has been truly astoundingfrom humble beginnings (one endowed fund established in 1952) to more than 300 named scholarship funds available today, providing a total of $1,765,000 in financial aid in 2001-2002. These funds assisted 730 students with an average award of $2,417. The named scholarship program took a giant leap forward during the Campaign for Calvin College (1991-1996), when the number of scholarships doubled from 93 to 186. Since then, the program has continued to grow each year. Twenty-five new scholarships were established in 1999 alone. Donors especially enjoy the interaction they have with their student recipientssome of those relationships have continued long past graduation. The enthusiasm of current scholarship donors is contagious. Many have inspired others to create scholarship funds just by sharing their stories. The college, along with past and present recipients, gratefully acknowledges those who generously and thoughtfully give of their resources to help others. See pages 30 and 31 for a complete list of named scholarships.
