Student Involvement - Tapestry
The Tapestry Leadership Program is a grant funded program that will weave minority students more fully into the fabric of Calvin College by providing them with early academic support, peer networks, mentoring opportunities, leadership development experiences, and goal setting assistance. We have based these components on a basic principle: that minority students who graduate from Calvin College have succeeded, in part, because they have “found their place,” getting connected to the opportunities and people who can assist them in discovering and reaching their goals. This is a program with family values and characteristics. Tapestry Logo
Entrada Early Start Program:
The Entrada Early Start Program (EESP) provides first-year minority students with a Calvin College living and learning experience prior to the start of their first semester as full-time students at Calvin College. While living on campus, the EESP students, up to 50 North American minority high school juniors and seniors, will take a Calvin College course along with Calvin students. EESP students also live in the residence halls and eat in the dining halls while experiencing the curricular and co-curricular aspects of Calvin College during the summer. Through EESP, students join a supportive peer network of academic scholars who positively contribute to life at Calvin College long after this summer program ends.
Mentoring/ Discipleship:
Mentoring and Discipleship connects qualified students to peer, faculty, staff and alumni mentors (not tutors). This partnership is geared toward developing the whole student by creating an environment of trust, respect, confidentiality, guidance, and discipleship. Our hope is that each student will create a bond with their mentor that will last beyond the current academic school year and their time at Calvin College. Each student will meet with their mentor various times during each semester and would also be able to attend several trips and events.
Leadership Seminars:
The leadership seminars are led by faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders. These seminars will focus on various aspects of goal-setting, study skills, career and vocation, leadership, community involvement, and spirituality. Some seminars may take the form of local and/or national conferences. These will be held approximately six to eight times per academic year and cover topics such as:
- Understanding campus opportunities
- Identifying campus resources
- Developing a personal mission statement
- Mapping your assets
And more…
Our hope is that small break-out session groups will begin, which will provide support, advice, conversation, and clarity of topic(s) to those involved.

AHANA Excellence Awards:
The AHANA Excellence Awards are presented to students who have been outstanding in one or more areas of the Tapestry Leadership Program. Special emphasis will be placed on graduating students as they transition from being leaders on campus to leaders in the community. This event occurs in partnership with the International Student Advisory Committee.
