New Student Resources
Follow these simple steps to make an employment plan
Decide if working during your first semester is the right choice for you. Statistically, students who work 10 hours per week or less have a better than average G.P.A. and higher retention and graduation rates. However, the best option is the one that is right for you. If you decide to work you may opt for either off or on-campus jobs. Many opportunities are posted on Knightvision and sorted by category. On-campus jobs offer advantages to first year students. 1) they develop skills 2) they add to your professional references 3) Medicare and FICA taxes are not withheld 4) you can often work between classes 5) you can walk to work and 6) your supervisor understands that your academic commitment is a priority.
Put the Plan into Action
Login to KnightVision, select the "Students" organization under the Community tab and from the menu click on JOBSHOP. All positions are listed by category and there is a separate category for on-campus jobs. Each job posting will have information about how to apply. Some postings will have an on-line application. Supervisors will be posting positions all year long. A variety of jobs are often available but there are no guarantees of employment. Students may apply for any or all jobs posted. Listed positions will often have specific hours or qualifications and students may decide which jobs would work best for them. Sometimes this means waiting for the right job to be posted. Each department has their own hiring process. They may require an interview or additional application information.
New Employees Must Complete Tax and I-9 Forms
Before you begin your new job at Calvin College you must complete Federal, State and City W-4 forms plus the I-9 form. Your supervisor will explain the process to you. Be prepared to show required documents that establish your employment eligibility. See the Payroll Office website for a list of acceptable documents required to complete the I-9 Form. An I-9 Form must be completed and proper identification shown before students may begin to work. It is much easier to bring these documents to campus than to have them mailed to you.
