COBRA

Under the federal Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), any staff member who loses medical and/or dental insurance coverage as a result of a reduction of hours of employment or termination of employment is eligible for group health and/or dental insurance continuation coverage at his or her expense. In addition, spouses or dependents of staff members who become ineligible for benefits may choose to participate, at their own expense, in a continuation of group health insurance coverage. According to the guidelines set by COBRA, the continuation can extend for a period of time not greater than eighteen months for the staff member and not greater than thirty-six months for dependents.
