Staff development: Staff training

Staff training

Sexual harassment awareness and prevention training

Calvin College is committed to creating a learning, working and living environment that is fair, respectful and free from harassment. The human resources office provides sexual harassment awareness and prevention training to all staff members. Calvin is committed to ridding our campus of sexual harassment and we encourage all faculty and staff members to discuss harassment concerns with the human resources office. Visit the harassment page to see and sign up for upcoming dates for this training.

New staff orientation (NSO)

NSO is an orientation session for new staff. It is designed to introduce or reacquaint staff members with the institutional identity and mission of the college. The sessions are also designed to give new employees ample opportunities to connect, learn and grow here at Calvin. Presenters from across the campus will spend time with new staff talking about various offices, policies and procedures for getting things done at Calvin. Visit the most current NSO schedule. For more information about NSO, contact human resources.

Guide staff mentoringTop

The Guide staff mentoring program works to assist new staff to navigate Calvin. The ABCs of the Guide program are:

  • Acclimate - helps mentee learn the culture of Calvin and/or West Michigan
  • Brainstorm - provides an outlet for the mentee to share ideas and express concerns
  • Connect - helps mentee discover tools and resources for performing job well

Human resources pairs interested individuals up and facilitates the Guide experience. For more information on signing up, visit the Guide page. If you have additional questions about Guide, please contact human resources.

FEN training

In partnership with the office for multicultural affairs, human resources provides training to various staff groups on the From Every Nation (FEN) document. Calvin College is committed to becoming a genuinely multicultural Christian academic community. In this training, our office offers an introduction to FEN principles, entitled “Creating a Welcoming Environment.” We are also willing to develop training to meet your specific multicultural needs. These trainings give an overview of the FEN document and work towards accomplishing Calvin’s multicultural goals.

If you are interested in setting up a FEN-related training for your office, contact human resources. For more information on race, cultural and diversity training, visit the multicultural affairs website.

Professional development days

The human resources office is committed to provide training outlets for office assistants across campus. To do this, we offer professional development days for office assistants several times throughout the year. Sessions topics fall within three categories - technology, interaction and design. The sessions are open to all assistants at least half time or greater with permission of supervisor. Participants must RSVP. For more information or to RSVP, visit the professional development days page.
