Position classes and grades
Position descriptions are evaluated using a point factor system. This method is used to determine the grade of each position based on an assessment of the content of the position. This method focuses on the nature and requirements of a position rather than the skills, background, characteristics or pay of the person in the position. Each position is evaluated for each of eight factors and point weightings are assigned within ten grades.
Position classification categories include:
- Job complexity/breadth of tasks
- Accountability/impact of the position
- Decision-making/independent judgment
- Physical demands/working conditions
- Communication skills
- Working relationships
Salary is based on a number of factors including education, experience, internal equity and budget. Grade minimums will be provided but actual salary is determined at the time of hire based on the above factors.

Most locations and departments on campus are open during the regular school year from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Hourly, full-time staff members typically work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with an hour lunch break. In the summer, business hours adjust to 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a half-hour lunch break. During any four-hour period employees are given a 15 minute break. Salaried full-time staff members are expected to work between 40 and 45 hours per week, as necessary to fulfill their job requirements. If an employee consistently works and sustains hours beyond the normal working hours, vice presidents may award extra vacation time. There are opportunities to officially adjust a work schedule. There are times when employees are needed to work more than their scheduled hours for a particular project or event. In this case, non-exempt hourly employees are paid time and a half after reaching 40 hours worked in one week. Payroll generates the actual calculations. Alternative work arrangements Top
For the majority of staff positions at Calvin, the nature of the work requires that it be performed on campus. However, there are times when alternate work arrangements may be considered. With approval from your supervisor, divisional vice president and the director of human resources, working from home or telecommuting may be an option. These arrangements are rare, so please contact human resources for more in-depth information. You may also download the alternative work arrangements form.
Alternative work schedules
Some positions permit alternative work schedules, such as compressed working hours (40-45 hours in a four-day week) or a reduction in full time equivalent status (FTE). If the proposed schedule is for two weeks or less, only supervisor approval is needed.
If the proposed schedule change exceeds two weeks, you must submit an alternative work schedule request form. This form must be approved by your supervisor, divisional vice president and the director of human resources.
Alternative work schedules may be long term in nature but must be reviewed every six months to ensure the needs of the department are being met. Contact human resources for more details. Download the alternative work schedules form.

Payroll, timesheets and web time entry
Non-exempt hourly staff members are paid an hourly wage on a biweekly schedule for hours worked. Hours are submitted electronically online. Non-exempt staff members are paid an hourly wage on a biweekly schedule. Time cards are filled out online through KnightVision. Hours must be submitted by the employee and approved by the supervisor no later than 12 noon on the Monday before the pay date. Exempt staff members are paid an annual salary distributed over 24 semi-monthly pay periods, typically the 1st and 15th of the month. Exempt staff members are paid in advance of work completed.
